Ringo Starr fans petitioning to make him a Knight
Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair is being "flooded" with online requests for him to recommend Ringo Starr for a knighthood. The Liverpool Daily Post reported that nearly 1,500 UK fans have signed an "e-petition" on the official number10.gov.uk website, urging Blair to make Starr "Sir Ringo." The new online e-petition has replaced the traditional paper petitions presented to the Prime Minister's London home at 10 Downing Street.
The petition reads: "We, the under-signed, petition the Prime Minister to recommend to the Queen to confer a knighthood on Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey MBE)."
British supporters have until February 13th to add their names to the petition at petitions. pm.gov.uk/ringostarr. People are also able to "sign against" Starr receiving the knighthood, but there have been no names listed so far.
The Queen's Honors are awarded twice a year, in June and at the New Year. They are awarded to people for all types of service, including the performing arts.
Both Paul McCartney and the Beatles' legendary producer George Martin have already been knighted.
Starr, McCartney, and the late John Lennon and George Harrison were honored by the Queen in 1965 when they were honored with an MBE, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Lennon returned his in 1969 to protest Britain's political involvement in Biafra and Vietnam.
