Santana opens domestic abuse center
Carlos and Deborah Santana will be on hand today (Wednesday, January 24th) for the opening of a residence for families dealing with domestic abuse. The Santana House is located on the grounds of the USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Violence Intervention Program (VIP) Executive Director Dr. Astrid Heger said, "We are grateful to Carlos and Deborah Santana for their ongoing interest in and philanthropic support of our work. The Santana House will provide a number of our essential programs with much-needed space, and empower us to reach even more people."The Santana family support for VIP is an extension of the work they do for their non-profit Milagro Foundation, which supports programs for young people in education, health, and the arts. Carlos told us that he feels compelled to try and make things better around him: "I have certain visions about how we can make this world a better place to live, to co-share, and to co-exist. Live people on the planet is the most important thing. It's about all of us pointing our energy, 'cause we don't want to make the same mistakes we made the last 2,000 years."
As of now, Carlos is keeping his promise about taking this year off. However, the odd performance here and there isn't out of the question, as happened two weeks ago when the surviving members of the original Santana Band were onstage together in San Francisco.
