Anna Nicole Smith dead aged 39
Reality TV star and Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died on February 8th after collapsing at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. She was 39 and was best known for being a Playboy Playmate, starring in her self-titled reality series, battling her weight, and marrying 89-year-old Texas billionaire J. Howard Marshall II when she was 26. The busty blonde had been making headlines lately over the paternity of her infant daughter Dannielynn, who was born three days before her 20-year-old son Daniel died from a toxic mix of prescription drugs in September.
According to the Seminole Police Department, Smith's private nurse called paramedics to her hotel at 1:38 p.m. ET because Smith was unconscious. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 2:49. Chief Charlie Tiger of the Seminole Police Department detailed the specifics in a press conference: "At approximately 1:45 p.m. today the Seminole Police Department responded to the Hollywood Hard Rock Hotel in reference to a person needing medical assistance. The person later identified as Anna Nicole Smith was transported by paramedics, and transported to Hollywood... was treated by paramedics and transported to Hollywood Memorial Hospital. At 2:49 this afternoon, we were advised by hospital personnel that Anna Nicole Smith had died."
An autopsy will be performed on the TrimSpa spokeswoman today (February 9th). There's no word on who is taking care of baby Dannielynn or who will get custody of her.
Smith was born and raised in Texas and dropped out of school in ninth grade. She married 16-year-old Billy Wayne Smith at the age of 18 and had his son Daniel shortly thereafter. The couple divorced in 1992, which was the year she first appeared in Playboy and was signed as a Guess model. She was named Playmate of the Year in 1993.
A year later, the 26-year-old Smith married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II. They had met while she was a dancer at a topless bar.
Marshall died in 1995 and Smith fought for his fortune from then on out. Marshall's son believed he was the rightful recipient of his father's billions and sued Smith a number of times to keep the money away from her. The feud made it to the Supreme Court last February, and the justices ruled that Smith was eligible to continue her court battle.
This past September, Smith gave birth to daughter Dannielynn and said her attorney Howard K. Stern was the baby's father. Smith's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead claimed that he was the father and sued Smith to get a paternity test for the baby. The tests had not been performed before Smith's passing. Birkhead's attorney said her client was "not okay" after hearing that Smith had died.
ANNA NICOLE SMITH SOUNDBITES
Anna Nicole Smith told Larry King why she decided to lose weight: "Then I heard a lot more, a lot more and all the fat jokes that everyone was saying. You know, I really didn't care and then I looked in the mirror and I'm just like, 'I am fat.' You know I am fat. So I just started losing weight."
Anna Nicole Smith told Larry King that everyone was shocked that she lost so much weight: "Everybody's really shocked, because no one believed it and no one believed I lost the weight. Everybody's like no, you know all the media is calling. She didn't lose the weight. Oh she didn't do the Knit show because she didn't lose the weight and all this you know crap. And now they saw it and now they could eat their words."
Anna Nicole Smith told Larry King it was hard to be in a relationship: "I don't trust anybody. It's hard, it's very hard and I don't go out. I don't go out, you know, because I don't have any dates to call me to go out. So how do you find somebody to date. It's really hard."
Anna Nicole Smith appeared to be under the influence when introducing Kanye West during the 2004 American Music Awards: "I was honored to be on our next performer's new video. And if I ever record an album, I want this guy to produce my, make me beautiful duets. Because he's freaking genius."
REACTIONS TO ANNA NICOLE SMITH'S DEATH
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner said in a statement: "I am very saddened to learn about Anna Nicole's passing. She was a dear friend who meant a great deal to the Playboy family and to me personally. My thoughts and prayers are with her friends and loved ones during this difficult time."
PETA said, "PETA is extremely upset by the news of Anna Nicole Smith's untimely death. She was a great friend to animals and used every opportunity to speak out against senseless cruelty. We always thought Anna Nicole was a perfect fit for PETA because, just like us, she not only hated cruelty to animals and loved her dog but also couldn't be ignored, no matter what people though of her, they always had an opinion, one way or another."
