Anna Nicole Smith's body headed to Bahamas
Anna Nicole Smith can finally be laid to rest after a week of haggling over her remains. Florida Judge Larry Seidlin said on February 22nd that the Playboy Playmate and diet supplement spokesperson belonged with her dead son Daniel in the Bahamas, and he appointed lawyer Richard Milstein to oversee details of her burial.
Milstein is the court-appointed legal guardian of Smith's daughter Dannielynn and immediately after Milstein's custody directive, he said he'd send the corpse to the Bahamas for a funeral. He'll arrange the service with input from Smith's boyfriend Howard K. Stern, ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead, and estranged mother Virgie Arthur.
By giving Milstein custody of Smith's remains, Seidlin circumvented actually having to decide where Smith should be buried, or whether or not Stern or Arthur had legal rights to the reality show star.
Seidlin's directions were considered a "win" for Stern, who had been fighting to get Smith's decomposing corpse to the island nation they called home. Smith's mother wanted the remains in a family plot in Texas.
An emotional Seidlin said his ruling was nothing to be happy about: "This is not a happy moment. I want her buried with her son in the Bahamas. I want them to be together (sobs). You know, she had to live all her years under this kind of exposure. I just get a week and a half of it and it's ready to flatten me down."
A teary Seidlin awards custody to Milstein: "Richard Milstein, Esquire, as the guardian of Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, is awarded custody of the remains of Anna Nicole Smith. (Sighs) The Broward County Medical Examiner is ordered to release those remains to Milstein in accordance with Milstein's directives."
