Billy Joel hails "Whole Lotta Love"
Billy Joel says that he was specifically inspired by Frank Sinatra while recording his new online single, called "All My Life." The song, which is available through the people.com website for a special Valentine's Day digital download, is Joel's first new pop song in 14 years. Joel wrote the song in 2005 in celebration of his and wife Katie Lee Joel's first wedding anniversary.
He explained to People that it's different from his classic hits, admitting that, "It's not a typical 'Billy Joel song.' I thought it would be great for Tony Bennett. I hope he does it, anyway. I recorded it with a full orchestra -- a real old-fashioned session just like they did in the '50s. And I dressed like Frank Sinatra -- black hat, skinny tie. hat with the narrow brim. The outfit put me in the mood... I took on a whole other persona."
When asked what makes a good love song, Joel explained that, "It can't be all hearts and flowers. There has to be pain. I have regrets in my life. Anyone who says they don't have regrets hasn't really lived."
When Joel was asked what he does on his ideal Valentine day, he joked that, "I don't think I can explain that in People magazine."
Joel shared with People his Top Five favorite love songs:
"One for My Baby," Frank Sinatra: "Even when I was a kid and heard that song, I got it."
"Symphony No. 6," Beethoven: "You can hear that he was passionately in love when he wrote that."
"In My Life," the Beatles: "I don't know why. It's like being in love. You don't know why. You just are."
"Lay, Lady, Lay," Bob Dylan: "It's very languorous and he is such a great songwriter."
"Whole Lotta Love," Led Zeppelin: "It's a slamming hot love song."
"All My Life" will next be sold exclusively through Apple's iTunes Music Store from February 20th through March 6th, after which the track will be available through other online download sites. A CD version of the song will be made available later this year, although no date has been given.
Billy Joel performs tonight (Wednesday, February 14th in Columbia, South Carolina at the Colonial Center. He has dates booked through May.
