John Mellencamp learns lesson at first fashion show with wife
John Mellencamp is in New York City this week, doing promotion for his new album, Freedom's Road. By coincidence, it's also Fashion Week in New York, where designers are showing off their newest lines and models are strutting on catwalks in Bryant Park and other places. Mellencamp is quite familiar with the whole thing, since he's married to fashion model Elaine Irwin, and he told us that he was really shaken up the first time he attended one of her shows, back when they first started going out: "Elaine comes out and walks down the runway -- you know, she's got clothes on, she's dressed -- and everybody's hootin' and hollerin' like it's a strip show. And the guy I'm with is hootin' at her, and I go, 'That's Elaine -- what are you hootin' at her for?' He goes, 'Hey, man, every day she's your girlfriend, but when she's on that catwalk, she belongs to all of us.' (chuckles) You know, it taught me a big lesson -- hey, if you're gonna be married to a gal who is considered sexy and beautiful, you better get used to it, because when she's in the public eye, she belongs to everybody."
Mellencamp will made two TV appearances on Thursday, February 8th. First, he appeared on the Today show on NBC this morning, and then he was be on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart on Comedy Central.
Mellencamp is planning to tour later this year.
