Movie preview: Music and Lyrics
A washed up '80s pop star has one last chance at success when a modern day pop princess asks him to write a song for her. Problem is, Hugh Grant's Alex Fletcher can't write lyrics to save his life so he recruits his perky plant sitter Sophie to help him. The two bicker their way through the songwriting process and, this being a romantic comedy, fall for each other. Drew Barrymore also stars.
Hugh Grant said he was miscast in Music and Lyrics: "It's not easy for me. I'm a man of 46. I'm very ill cast in the film, I'm not a music enthusiast. I don't move very naturally, I don't sing very naturally, I don't exist very naturally. So to be... I found a lot of the pop stuff incredibly difficult."
Drew Barrymore was inspired by the movie to write her own song: "I wrote a song while we were on this movie actually. I was listening to the album by Jenny Lewis called Rabbit Fur Coat. It was my favorite album of 2006, I was obsessed with it and she made me think I could write a song and it's probably really terrible, it's probably pretty bad but this movie was inspiring to me."
Following are clips from Music And Lyrics:
Sophie discusses Alex's past hair: (Hugh Grant) "Did you ever hear of the band Pop?" (Drew Barrymore) "Yeah, of course, everybody has. My sister Rhonda loved them. They had that ridiculous hair and those ridiculous outfits and - oh my God, you're one of them." (Grant) "That hair was actually very much in style then." (Barrymore) "I'm very sorry." (Grant) "That's fine, but I would love to talk to you about maybe writing some lyrics."
Sophie and Alex rearrange furniture: (Hugh Grant) "What are you doing, you madwoman? You're destroying my apartment!" (Drew Barrymore) "I can't write from across the room." (Grant) "Well you're not writing here. Get back! Get back to your corner. I can't have you here, I'll be blocked. I'll be completely stuck." (Barrymore) "Go out the other side." (Grant) "I've never been the other side." (Barrymore) "Push, push, push push!" (Grant) "Good. Better."
Sophie and Alex work on the song: (Drew Barrymore) "And I still don't like my line about places in my mind." (Hugh Grant) "It's fine!" (Barrymore) "Fine isn't good." (Grant) "We only have time for fine. I'll tell you what, look, we'll change your line about places in my mind if I can keep the chord sequence into the bridge, yeah?" (Barrymore) "This isn't a negotiation! It's either right or wrong, inspired or insipid."
