Smashing Pumpkins reveal album title and release date
The Smashing Pumpkins have revealed that the band's sixth studio album, and first since founder Billy Corgan reactivated the group last year, will be titled Zeitgeist. The disc will arrive on July 7th, an odd date because it is a Saturday and not the music industry's usual release day of Tuesday. The news was unveiled on Wednesday, February 7th, in a message sent to fans who had signed up as "friends" of the band on MySpace. Zeitgeist is the first new Pumpkins record since 2000's MACHINA/The Machines of God, after which Corgan dissolved the group.
Recent statements by Pumpkins manager Paul Geary seem to indicate that original guitarist James Iha and bassist D'Arcy Wretzky will not be joining Corgan and founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlin in the new lineup.
The Pumpkins have also mapped out four live dates so far, all confirmed for June in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. More are expected soon.
