"300" star Gerard Butler defends action genre
Phantom Of The Opera star Gerard Butler goes way back in time in his new movie 300. He plays King Leonidas of Sparta, the man who led 300 soldiers in battle against hundreds of thousands of invading Persian forces in 480 B.C. The showdown is depicted through an almost cartoonish reality to reflect the Frank Miller graphic novel upon which it's based.
300 is filled with numerous slow-motion shots, decapitations, and grimy muscle flexing, and there's dialogue and story too. Butler said acting in a movie like 300 is tough because so much is going on: "I think people are too easy to kind of rubbish the kind of work it takes to perform in an action movie, especially one like this because you're dealing with tricky dialogue; you're dealing with values and situations and scenarios that are so huge and kind of difficult to comprehend; and you're in a whole other reality."
300 was directed by Zack Snyder, the man behind the 2004 Dawn Of The Dead remake. It opens nationwide Friday (March 9th).
