Cincinnati orchestra cancels "Dukes of Hazard" concert
Bo and Luke Duke have hit the wrong note with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. The music group cancelled an upcoming Dukes-themed concert with Hazzard stars Tom Wopat and John Schneider last week out of fear that the joint effort would offend audiences not fond of the TV brothers' Confederate Flag-waving personas. Wopat and Schneider have toured as musicians for years and had already signed contracts with the Cincinnati orchestra when it bowed out.
The orchestra said in a statement that "we decided that some of the messages conveyed in the program are not consistent with the efforts of the Pops to reach out to all members of our community." Schneider called the recall as "huge shock" and said he'd "like for people to examine their motives and their knee-jerk reactions to someone else's prejudice and bigotry."
The orchestra invited the actors back for future collaborations.
Meanwhile, Hazzard actor-turned-Congressman Ben Jones called the cancellation a "blacklisting" that was "out of some kind of political correctness that is just plain wrongheaded." Jones played cousin Cooter on the show.
