Cool Hand Luke, Amityville Horror director dead
Stuart Rosenberg, the director behind Cool Hand Luke and the original Amityville Horror, has passed away. The 79-year-old director died Thursday (March 15th) of a heart attack at his Beverly Hills home, according to his son.
Though not as familiar to audiences as some of his contemporaries, Rosenberg was responsible for a string of hit movies in the '60s and '70s. He paired with Paul Newman several times on projects like Cool Hand Luke, Pocket Money, and The Drowning Pool, and teamed up with another '70s heartthrob, Robert Redford, for the prison drama Brubaker. His last commercial success was The Pope Of Greenwich Village in 1984, and his last film was 1991's My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.
Rosenberg started his career as a television director on programs including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, and The Untouchables.
He spent the latter years of his life teaching directing at the American Film Institute.
