Daily Show correspondent branches out in "The Winner"
Former Daily Show correspondent Rob Corddry branches out on his own in the new Fox comedy, The Winner. Corddry's character Glen is actually more of a loser than a winner considering that he's an unemployed 32-year-old still living with his parents. But things perk up for Glen when Allison, a divorced childhood sweetheart, moves back into town with her son and he uses her return as inspiration to do things like get a job and practice his romantic moves.
In Sunday's (March 4th) series premiere of The Winner, Glen and Alison's son Josh become fast friends and end up on a double date with Alison and Josh's dream girl. Corddry said audiences should expect scenarios like this and even spicier ones on The Winner: "You ever seen one of those Spanish soap operas? That's what it's like. You know, it's really like dramatic, chew on the scenery kind of angst. Like, you don't know what's going to happen. In one of those scenes, I might full on make out with my mom. You're going to have to tune in. It's not really my mom, it's an actress. Do better than that How I Met Your Mother."
Corddry also said having his own show has its advantages when it comes to his old boss, Jon Stewart: "The best part about being a lead on my own show is being able to call Jon Stewart on the phone and hang up on him. You know? Like, hey, what did you do today on your cable show? My network show, I kicked ass, click."
The Winner debuts Sunday at 8:30 ET on Fox.
