Genesis announces North American tour and new box sets
The members of Genesis hosted a press conference in New York City yesterday (Wednesday, March 7th) to announce the North American dates for their reunion tour, as well as some new box sets that are in the works. Just as they're doing in Europe, the band will play about 20 dates in North America, with the mix of arenas and stadiums kicking off September 7th in Toronto. They've only announced 13 of the shows so far, so the current tour-ender in Los Angeles on October 12th could change.

Sep 14 - Montreal, QUE - Olympic Stadium

Phil Collins told us that the idea for the tour came from the thought they had of joining forces with singer Peter Gabriel and guitarist Steve Hackett to perform their 1974 album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway: "We spent a couple of weeks last year in October rehearsing, just to see how it felt, really. And although that two weeks in itself was a leftover from the Lamb Lies Down idea, when we were gonna sort of see if actually we could physically play The Lamb Lies Down, you know? But when that turned out that that wasn't gonna happen, we just thought, 'Oh, let's get together anyway, just to see what it feels like to play what we may play on this tour.' And it all came together very quickly."
Guitarist-bassist Mike Rutherford told us that it feels great to be working with his mates again: "There's something about being in a band -- a combination of people playing music together, and obviously with Darryl and Chester in this case, which is... it, it's, it's a unique feeling, which you can't do with anyone else, apart from the guys who are in the band."
Also at the press conference, plans were announced for a series of Genesis box sets. The first one is a six-CD/six DVD package called Genesis: 1976-1981 that will feature remixed versions of the studio albums Trick Of The Tail, Wind And Wuthering, And Then There Were Three, Duke, and Abacab, along with 5.1 Surround Sound mixes of the albums, plus rare audio and video tracks from the band's archives, photo galleries, and new interview footage. The sixth CD, which is titled Extra Tracks 1976 To 1982, is just that -- 13 songs that weren't released on any of the band's albums, but were on limited-edition EPs and single B-sides. Genesis: 1976-1981 will be available April 24th.
