John Waite salutes St. Patrick's Day in new song

John Waite's new single is a salute to this weekend's holiday of St. Patrick's Day. The song is called, appropriately enough, "St. Patrick's Day," and it's about a red-haired Irish girl named Mary who meets a guy from the Bronx at the annual St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City on March 17th.

Waite told us the inspiration for the song came from a photo he saw at the New York Times building of a young woman and her introduction to a group of firefighters in the parade: "The firemen were marching with their flags, and this red-headed girl, she was about 18, had run out into the march. She was sticking her hips out, and she was laughing for the camera, and she was a very sexy little girl, and she was, like, flirting with these guys, and they're all laughing, and they're all Irish -- and it's the spirit of America. And I thought, well, if anybody ever showed a picture of how great America's supposed to be, or is, or will be -- what it means to be an American -- that was the picture."

"St. Patrick's Day" is on Waite's new album, which is called Downtown... Journey Of A Heart.

Waite, who co-wrote the song with Glen Burtnick, lives in Santa Monica, California, these days, but he spent several years in New York City, and says he loves getting back whenever he can.
