Linkin Park nuking old sound on new album

Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington told MTV.com yesterday (Wednesday, March 7th) that the title of the band's new album, Minutes to Midnight, is a reference to the Doomsday Clock, a device created after the United States introduced atomic weapons at the end of World War II. Bennington explained, "It basically has hands from the 45-minute mark until midnight...but since we have this (nuclear) power, we're always just 15 minutes away from the end of the world. And when the U.S. and the Soviet Union were involved in their nuclear standoff in the 1960s, the clock was set at three minutes to midnight. And it's moved back and forth about 18 times since its inception. Right now we're at five minutes until midnight."

Bennington added that the Minutes to Midnight concept also refers to Linkin Park essentially blowing up its old sound. The vocalist said, "The way we've been classified, and how people think they know us, that's all going to die."

Minutes to Midnight arrives in stores on May 15th, with the first single, "What I've Done," heading to the airwaves later this month.

The group is currently choosing the disc's final track listing from a collection of 17 songs. Bennington described one song, "The Little Things Give You Away," as "the pinnacle of what we can achieve as a band."

Linkin Park will reactivate its Projekt Revolution tour this summer in support of the album, with My Chemical Romance rumored to be one of the acts on board. The two-month trek is expected to kick off around July 24th.
