Movie preview: The Last Mimzy
A brother and sister on holiday at the beach find a stuffed rabbit and assorted items that seem to have magical powers. The longer they keep their new treasures, the smarter they get. Turns out the toy bunny was sent from the future to find a cure in the present for a disease that's going to wipe out human life as we know it. Based on a short story by Lewis Padgett, The Last Mimzy also features an original song by Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.
Timothy Hutton says Mimzy is a good family film: "I felt it was a film for families and a great opportunity some films can have to connect families as an experience. Go to the movie, experience it together, talk about it later, reference it later, that kind of thing."
Rainn Wilson said he's a lot like his teacher character in Mimzy: "I feel like in an alternate universe I would have been Larry White. I was an English major at the University of Washington and if I had gone on a different path, if I hadn't gone to New York and become an actor I probably would be teaching high school English."
Following are clips from The Last Mimzy:
Science teacher Larry tells the Wilders their son is a genius: (Rainn Wilson) "Did he do this on his won? Did you help him?" (Joely Richardson) "No, he's done it all by himself. He's just sort of taken off all of a sudden, you know, in the last month or so. His sister's highly gifted too." (Wilson) "No, this is more than highly gifted, this is genius. He's going to win the National Science Fair!"
Emma tells her dad that Mimzy is sick: (Rhiannon Leigh Wryn) "Something's wrong. She's getting weaker. I'm afraid she's going to die." (Timothy Hutton) "She's a stuffed animal, Emma. Now you gotta stop it with this Mimzy stuff. Okay here's what I'd like you to do, I'd like you to just put Mimzy away, put the rabbit away all right, so we can have a really great breakfast together."
Naomi explains an ancient Tibetan belief that relates to the boy Noah: (Kathryn Hahn) "This is actually an astrological configuration. The book says it's a map to the past and future. In Tibet they believe that there are extraordinary children with this very special knowledge and abilities. They are considered actually very rare souls, very gifted, like Noah."
