Movie preview: Pride
A former competitive swimmer, desperate to make ends meet, takes a job cleaning up a derelict recreation center. He butts heads with the center's curmudgeony janitor at first but proves himself by teaching some of the neighborhood kids how to swim. Pride is inspired by the true story of Philadelphia coach Jim Ellis, and stars Terrence Howard and Bernie Mac.
Terrence Howard on wearing '70s costumes in Pride: "You know, this is disco time! You remember the disco time from Saturday Night Fever. Tony and those cats, they had nice bodies, they were slim and they could move across that floor. That's what I wanted, I wanted to put on my macking outfit and you know, and go and do it. And I looked forward to getting dressed every day."
Terrence Howard getting his body ready to wear a pair of Speedos: "I was still in the back trying to do some push-ups and all that before coming out. I was like, 'Get it together, get it together!' And I still couldn't get my stomach right, I remember Darrel Foster, the guy that trained me asking, he's like, 'Man, we need just one more week, one more week and I'll have you ripped.' But I wasn't ripped."
Following are clips from Pride:
Coach Ellis confronts Elston: (Terrence Howard) "What is your problem dude?" (Bernie Mac) "What's my problem? What's my problem?" (Howard) "Yeah, what is your problem?" (Mac) "Well, first of all I'm gonna tell you what my problem is: you came in here and interrupted my story and that ain't cool. My second problem is I've been a market foster man ever since this place was built and the first I hear about them tearing it down is right now. Oh, it ain't like I didn't see it coming, but they could have gave me a heads up, you know."
Elston tells the boys to stay in line: (Terrence Howard) "Guess we just in the place we supposed to be right now." (Bernie Mac) "Is that right?" (Howard) "Yeah." (Mac) "You all be careful. No clowning in and out the pool. And I'm be watching." (Howard) "Hey Elston, why don't you come and swim with us?" (Mac) "Jim, where I come from we swim nekkid and I don't want to embarrass nobody."
Coach Ellis gives the team swim gear: (Terrence Howard) "One size fit all!" (Swimmer 1) "No. Hell no!" (Swimmer 2) "That ain't funny, what do you mean?" (Howard) "This is a swim meet, this isn't some backyard function. This is proper swimming attire. This is your uniform." (Swimmer 3) "That's not my uniform." (Swimmer 4) "Elston, Elston, come on now! I can't even get my boys in those!" (Bernie Mac) "Trust me, you and your boys'll be just fine."
