Movie review: I Think I Love My Wife
Chris Rock co-wrote, directed, and stars in I Think I Love My Wife, the story of a bored family man tempted by a sexy friend. Rock's Richard Cooper seems to have it all with his solid career, beautiful wife, and happy kids, but what he really craves is excitement. That comes in the form of Nikki, a friend's ex-girlfriend who pops into Richard's office one day and becomes a secret fixture in his life. Pretty soon Richard messes up at work and home just for a chance to be with Nikki and he has to decide whether or not he's going to cross the line into infidelity. Kerry Washington co-stars as Nikki, and Gina Torres plays Rock's wife.
Chris Rock said that despite the scores of scantily clad female bodies in I Think I Love My Wife, the movie not a guy flick: "I think it's a relationship flick that's written by guys. I mean, the women are pretty well written in this movie, especially the Nikki character. They're not just props for the guys. 'Cause like, when you see a chick flick like guys are just so stupid, they're so just props. Ghost Rider's a guy flick. This is not Ghost Rider."
Kerry Washington on her role: "When I read her I thought, 'Oh, it would be so easy to make her the cliche of the other woman. But I want to make sure that she has a lot of humanity. Here's a real human being who's doing something that's not so... not to be celebrated really, trying to sleep with a married man, and so I had to find the inner justification."
Following are clips from I Think I Love My Wife:
Richard complains about sex: (Chris Rock) "My wife is beautiful, intelligent, and a great mother. It's the perfect life. There's just one problem: we're bored out of our minds! Now I'm sure I'd have a much rosier outlook on life if my wife and I actually had sex. But there always seems to be something wrong." (Gina Torres) "Nope, my face hurts. It's not your birthday!"
Richard fantasizes about single life: (Chris Rock) "I'm not crazy. Would you tell your wife about Nikki? But I got to admit, seeing Nikki got me to thinking, what would it be like to be single again? I mean, if I were single I wouldn't do all that romance and flowers crap. If I was single again I would get right to the point. Excuse me, would you like to have sex with me?" (Woman) "Of course I would." (Rock) "Well come on!"
Richard introduces Nikki to Brenda: (Chris Rock) "Hey, Nikki, Brenda. Brenda, Nikki." (Gina Torres) "Hi." (Kerry Washington) "Hi." (Rock) "Nikki's an old friend. What's it been, like seven, eight years?" (Washington) "At least." (Rock) "Nikki used to date Nelson, remember?" (Torres) "Yes, yes. Right."
