Movie review: Premonition
A Louisiana housewife named Linda is told her husband is dead one day, but finds him alive and well after waking up from what she thought was a dream. The next day, he really is dead -- there's a funeral to prove it -- and Linda starts believing that she had a premonition predicting his demise. This real-versus-imagined back-and-forth continues for days until Linda decides it's time to take her future into her own hands. Sandra Bullock stars.
Sandra Bullock on Premonition's premise: "She's falling apart. And then the next day, after having dealt with that horrendous day, she wakes up and he's alive. And her days are out of order and she's not sure why and she has to piece together that she's not going to know whether she's going to wake up and he's dead or alive and people begin to realize she's insane. Or is she?"
Sandra Bullock on her character's dilemma in Premonition: "It sort of brings up the question, 'If you had the chance to do it, not over again, but if you were given a chance to make a U-turn to fix something would you? Or would you just continue on the path and change your life? Would you go back and reconnect with someone or would you say, that's been done, been there, I've seen how that ends and I'm going to go on and start afresh.' So it's that sort of fork in the road that's presented to her."
Following are clips from Premonition:
Linda refuses to believe that her husband is dead while at his wake: (Sandra Bullock) "This isn't right." (Nia Long) "No, everything's fine. Do you need to go upstairs and get more sleep?" (Bullock) "No, no, no. I don't need anymore sleep and I don't need to wake up either." (Kate Nelligan) "Everything's going to be fine." (Bullock) "No mother, everything is not fine! Something is really, really wrong." (Nelligan) "Ok." (Bullock) "He's not dead."
Linda meets with Dr. Roth to discuss the premonitions she's been having surrounding husband Jim's death: (Sandra Bullock) "I wake up and he's dead. I wake up and he's alive. Different things around me all the time that I can't explain. Things that I've done. People talking to me. People, people who know me but I have never met." (Peter Stormare) "People like me?" (Bullock) "Yes." (Stormare) "Obviously you're dealing with some inconsistencies." (Bullock) "Oh yeah. I wake up every morning to find my husband has died again. I think that goes a little beyond inconsistent."
Linda asks her mom if it's ok to allow her premonition's of Jim's death to come true: (Kate Nelligan) "You ok hon?" (Sandra Bullock) "Hi mom, if I let Jim die, is that the same thing as killing him?" (Nelligan) "Honey Jim's already dead."
