Movie review: Reign Over Me
Adam Sandler puts on his serious hat to play Charlie Fineman, a once successful dentist who's been reduced to a mumbling, video-game playing recluse after his wife and daughters are killed on September 11th. Charlie lives off his insurance money and mingles with no one until his dental school roommate runs into him on the street and tries helping him through his grief. Don Cheadle co-stars.
Adam Sandler on accepting the challenge of his Reign role: "I was afraid of it. And then one night I read it again and it just was very moving to me and I just couldn't stop thinking about it and I wanted to challenge myself. I can't articulate why I liked it so much but it hurt my heart when I read it so much and also made me laugh. I just wanted to accept the challenge of doing that role."
Adam Sandler on his heavy Reign role: "I prepared for a long time and tried to stay as focused as I can be. I knew it was very important, the part, and to feel as much as I could so I tried to just be prepared for every day. It wasn't like movies I've done in the past where I'm laughing and having a great time on the set, it was definitely a heavier feeling for me."
Following are clips from Reign Over Me:
Charlie doesn't recognize his old roommate Alan: (Adam Sandler) "So we know each other?" (Don Cheadle) "Are you kidding me? It's Alan Johnson, Charlie. We went to dental school together. Burroughs Hall, I was your college roommate for Chrissake, you don't remember me?" (Sandler) "Yeah, very cool, very cool. Good, good to see you Burroughs." (Cheadle) "It's Johnson. Charlie?"
Charlie asks Alan out: (Adam Sandler) "Were you in bed already? What's going on? It's ten-thirty." (Don Cheadle) "I'm always in bed at ten-thirty." (Sandler) "That sucks! That's grim. You wanna go out man, go have some fun? Let's hang out." (Cheadle) "Right now? (Sandler) "Yeah! Wake up, come on, let's - can he go out, is he allowed out?" (Cheadle) "Charlie, don't do that, don't ask my wife permission for me to go out. I'm standing right here in front of you, I'm not seven years old." (Sandler) "You're right. Can you go out?"
Dr Oakhurst and Charlie talk: (Adam Sandler) "Is this session over yet?" (Liv Tyler) "No, it just started." (Sandler) "Can it be?" (Tyler) "If you want it to be, yes. Charlie, before you go I'd just, I'd like to say something. The fact is, you had a family and you suffered a great loss and until you can discuss that and we can really talk about that, this is all just an exercise."
