Movie review: Shooter
Mark Wahlberg plays a marine sniper brought out retirement by a colonel who convinces him he's the only one that can uncover a plot to kill the president. Ever the patriot, Wahlberg's Bob Lee Swagger takes on the assignment, discovers he's been set up, and vows vengeance on the men who framed him and killed his beloved dog.
Mark Wahlberg explains the premise behind his Shooter character's actions: "He's one of probably the best four shots in the entire world at any given time. He was a gunnery sergeant in the marines. They recruit him for this job. The archbishop of Ethiopia ends up getting assassinated and he's now on the run, shot twice, and has to not only survive that, but then eventually figure out how he can prove his innocence and take down those who are responsible."
Mark Wahlberg says Shooter is the type of film he'd run out to see: "This is the kind of movie that I would run out and see. This is the kind of movie they don't make any more. This is a really smart, character driven action movie that has a point of view, raises some questions, and takes a pretty strong look at certain things. And, you know, they haven't made those movies, the kind of movies that I really enjoy watching, since, you know, the '70s."
The following are clips from Shooter:
Colonel Isaac Johnson brings in Bob Lee to help thwart an assassination attempt on the president: (Danny Glover) "There's going to be an attempt on the life of the president in the next two weeks. The president has three public engagements during that time. Standard secret service protection quota is out to 880 yards. But this intercept claims that the shot will be taken from beyond a mile. We need you to scout, tell us how you would do it, so we can stop it."
Sarah asks Bob Lee why he agreed to help protect the president: (Kate Mara) "Why'd you go?" (Mark Wahlberg) "Because I know what buttons to press. I'm still enough of a sucker. You push that patriot button and I'll sit up in my chair and say which way do you want me to go, boss. I'm not really real proud of it, but I'm not ashamed either. Yeah, I got a plan, but I think I'm going to need your help." "Excuse me sir, take off your hat and look at me. Take your hat off! Argh!"
