My Chemical Romance singer says response is "incredible" to live shows
My Chemical Romance is playing its entire new album, The Black Parade, in sequence on the band's current tour, with the group also calling itself the Black Parade during that part of the show. Singer Gerard Way told us that the audience response to hearing the whole record has been amazing: "I think we've been one of the luckiest bands in the world to make a concept record and decide to play it front to back as an alter-ego, 'cause the response has been incredible. It's just so exciting to see every single track off The Black Parade, played in order, get the reaction that it did. We've been really lucky. I mean, I've heard some, you know, horror stories about bands trying to do the whole thing, but, you know, we've been real lucky with it." The first hour of the band's set is taken up with the concept CD, with the band returning for the last 30 minutes as My Chemical Romance to play some of its older hits.
The show opens with Gerard Way, as "the Patient," lying on a hospital bed with an IV in his arm. The set also features a clock tower, sheet metal backdrops and floating zeppelins, while the band dons black uniforms and white makeup as the Black Parade.
Other groups that have played entire concept albums live include the Who with Tommy, Pink Floyd with The Wall, and Green Day, who played all of American Idiot at a handful of specially selected performances.
My Chemical Romance appears on Tuesday, March 6th, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
