New to DVD: Rocky Balboa, Blood Diamond
This week's new DVD releases are a mixed bag of returning heroes, serious issues, fantasy tales, and religious stories.
ROCKY BALBOA gets the action started with the "Italian Stallion" back in the ring in an exhibition bout against a young heavyweight champ. His son is embarrassed by the comeback and the fact that Rocky still pines over his dead wife Adrian.
The Rocky Balboa DVD has seven deleted scenes, an alternate ending, making-of featurettes, and commentary from writer/director/star Sylvester Stallone.
In this deleted scene from the Rocky Balboa DVD, Rocky's brother-in-law Paulie tells him he doesn't want to visit the ice rink where Rocky fell for Adrian:(Burt Young) "Put this on please." (Sylvester Stallone) "I gotta wear a net?" (Young) "Ehhh, I'm gonna get in trouble." (Stallone) "Alright. Don't want you getting in no trouble." (Young) "But you know what I told you last year." (Stallone) "Yeah, but, you know I want you with me." (Young) "Hey, if the place gets robbed, who's blamed?" (Stallone) "Ahhh, Paulie. No one's robbing cows in Philly no more. Just for a few hours. I just think it's just good talking about the old days." (Young) "Sometimes talking old days stuff ain't so good."
BLOOD DIAMOND earned Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou Oscar nominations. DiCaprio plays a diamond smuggler with no loyalties except to himself and Hounsou is a fisherman holding onto a rare and valuable diamond.
The Blood Diamond DVD is available as a single disc or in a two-disc collection. The two-disc set has a DiCaprio profile, a look at female journalists in conflict regions, a feature on a diamond's journey from mine to retail store, and director's commentary.
In this clip from Blood Diamond, Danny asks Solomon about the diamond: (Leonardo DiCaprio) "What're you going to do now, huh? Listen, the right stone can buy anything -- information, safety, even freedom -- but a big stone does not stay secret for very long. The moment you tell anyone about it, your life is absolutely worthless. The only reason you're still alive is because you haven't told anyone where it is. Am I right? Am I? Who do you think got you out of jail, huh? That makes us partners!"
ERAGON is a fantasy adventure about a farm boy who becomes a dragon rider.
The Eragon DVD also comes as a single or double disc. The double disc has loads of extras like director's commentary, a six-part "making of" documentary, character profiles, extended and deleted scenes, animation guides, and an interview with author Christopher Paolini.
In this clip from Eragon, Brom tells Eragon it is his destiny to be a dragon rider: (Jeremy Irons) "It is your fate to be a dragon rider. The Vaarden need a rider if they are to defeat Durza and the king." (Edward Speelers) "I didn't ask for any of this." (Irons) "But you have been chosen never the less. A dragon will only hatch if it feels the presence of its rider. It'll wait forever if it has to. But now it's found you. It will serve you and only you and that's put your life in danger."
