R2-D2 mailboxes invade cities
The "Force" is with the post office in a big way starting March 16th. In honor of Star Wars' 30th anniversary, hundreds of the post office's free-standing blue collection boxes will be temporarily replaced by R2-D2 look-alikes. The R2-D2 collection boxes work like normal mailboxes and will be located in "high traffic, highly visible" locations in 200 cities across the country. The Star Wars-themed mail boxes are part of a promotion for a new stamp that'll be unveiled March 28th.
R2-D2 is the squat, white-and-blue droid that conveyed a distress message from Princess Leia to a wide-eyed Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars, and stood by the side of various Jedi throughout the sci-fi franchise.
While Star Wars fans might geek out over the R2-D2 mail boxes, the Post Office reminds people that these are real mail boxes with real mail inside, and it's a federal offense to try to steal or tamper with one.
One R2-D2 mail box has reportedly already disappeared from a Columbus, Ohio street corner.
