Rolling Stones & The Who are classic rock - but not The Police

Pete Townshend is excited about the upcoming Police reunion -- but he doesn't think they should be grouped with the Who or older '60s acts. He recently said to New York's radio station WAXQ-FM that, "They're now calling the Police 'classic rock.' I don't think so. The Police are punk. They're a punk band. They're not classic rock. You know, you've got the (Rolling) Stones and the Who. Classic rock -- finished. It's all over after that... This is just music. It's not clasic anything."

Townshend went on to talk about seeing the Police in the '80s at London's Wembley Stadium, and a past conversation he had with Paul Simon, in which Simon sang Sting's praises and called him his favorite modern singer-songwriter.

The latest excerpts from Townshend's upcoming autobiography due out next year, titled Pete Townshend: Who He?, are now posted on the official petetownshend-whohe.blogspot.com.
