Who & Faces members jam at South By Southwest
Who leader Pete Townshend made a special guest appearance last night (Wednesday, March 14th) at the Austin Music Awards, which were held in the Texas capitol as part of the annual South By Southwest Music Festival. Townshend joined Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan and his Bump Band onstage at the Austin Convention Center during a five-song tribute to the late Faces bassist Ronnie Lane. McLagan introduced Townshend as "Uncle Pete," and the Who guitarist played on two songs, including the Small Faces cut "What'cha Gonna Do About It?", which featured some inspired soloing by Townshend.
Townshend and Lane were old friends, and in 1977 they released a joint album called Rough Mix.
McLagan and his band released a tribute album last year called Spiritual Boy: An Appreciation Of Ronnie Lane.
While at the awards ceremony, McLagan was named Best Keyboardist, while Best Bassist honors went to the Bump Band's Mark Andes, who's worked with Heart, Spirit, and Firefall, among many others.
Townshend will be playing one of his Attic Jam shows with his girlfriend Rachel Fuller in Austin today (Thursday, March 15th), and they'll be joined by guests including Sean Lennon. The guitarist is also rumored to be making an appearance with the group the Fratellis at a Spin magazine party tomorrow (Friday, March 16th).
