Yoko Ono says the public's hatred made her stronger

Yoko Ono is shocked at receiving the first rave reviews of her musical career. Last month, in honor of her 74th birthday, she released the new album, titled Yes, I'm A Witch, which features younger alternative acts revamping and remixing her solo work.

Ono told The Toronto Sun that she never expected such a positive reception for the new collection, admitting that, "I'm totally shocked. In fact, it's tradition that I don't expect (positive reviews). But I'm thrilled with what's happening."

She went on to joke that, "One of the reasons that I'm sort of exuberant is because you hated me for such a long time, all of you, in a way. And that hatred was a big power. You gave me big power. Thank you."

Ono said that she never understood why critics always attacked her work with such vitriol: "I would say, 'What's your problem?! What's your problem about me?!' You know, that was the problem that I had from the beginning, so it's not a new feeling."

Yes, I'm A Witch peaked at Number 11 on the Billboard's Top Electronica Albums chart.

A companion album, titled Open Your Box, will be released on April 24th. The set will feature remixes of Ono's "Hell In Paradise," the Plastic Ono Band's "Give Peace a Chance," the title track, and three mixes of "Walking On Thin Ice," which she and John Lennon were mixing on December 8th, 1980 in the hours prior to his murder.
