Allman Brothers Band founders sign on to benefit for old friend

Allman Brothers Band founders Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks have signed on for a benefit to help an old friend with his medical bills. The show on Wednesday (April 18th) at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham is a fundraiser for singer-songwriter Scott Boyer, who had surgery earlier this year for a circulatory condition called peripheral artery disease. Boyer, like a lot of musicians, doesn't have health insurance, so Allman, Trucks, and Bonnie Bramlett, among many others, will get together with the goal of raising $100,000 for Boyer. Boyer told the Birmingham News, "The idea that people of this caliber are willing to do this for me, it's flattering, it's all kinds of things. It's overwhelming, I reckon is the word that fits best."

According to the paper, Boyer grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and played guitar with both Gregg and Duane Allman in the late '60s, and it was Duane who got Boyer's band Cowboy signed to the Allmans' label, Capricorn Records.

Boyer said, "I went to high school with Butch Trucks, and we don't get to see each other hardly any at all. Any reason why he and I can be in the same building at the same time is good enough for me. And the same thing with Gregg."

As a songwriter, Boyer's song "All My Friends" was done by Gregg Allman, and his "Please Be With Me" was recorded by Eric Clapton.
