Baby Metallica to keep her name
Metallica Tomaro, a seven-month-old Swedish girl whose parents fought to retain her first name, has been allowed to keep it after authorities withdrew their objections. According to The Local, the Swedish tax board dropped its opposition to the baby's name after her mother, Karolina Tomaro, brought the case to County Court, where it was decided that the baby could be named Metallica. The tax board, which must approve and register the names of all Swedish residents, initially rejected the name because they said it was too associated with the rock group and the word "metal." Karolina Tomaro said the victory felt good. The case attracted attention and support from all over the world, with Tomaro adding, "Several people suggested I should move to where they live, because then our daughter wouldn't have any problem in being named Metallica."
The dispute prevented the family from traveling and forced them to cancel a vacation, since little Metalica was unable to get a passport until her name was approved.
Metallica seems to be a popular name in Sweden -- there is reportedly a woman elsewhere in the country who uses it as a middle name.
