Haley Scarnato miffed about clothing criticism
The quest for the sixth American Idol continues tonight (April 17th) without Texas native Haley Scarnato. Scarnato was voted off last week amidst criticism that her good looks and sexy attire often drowned out her singing abilities.
Scarnato's vocals were good enough to land her a spot on this summer's American Idol tour, but she said she was hampered by the constant focus on her appearance: "Please, I'm not complaining about them saying that I'm pretty. That's amazing commenting on my legs but you know, I mean, this is a singing competition. This is what they tell everybody. This is a singing competition, sing. And they won't give me that. You know, I'm like, this is a singing competition, judge me on my singing, and they just won't, so it is what it is. I'll take whatever they can give me and throw away whatever I want to throw away."
Scarnato joked that had she survived last week's voting, she would have performed in a choir robe this week. She also said that her ensembles were all about entertainment in the end: "I want to present myself in the classiest way that I can but you know, I'm still an entertainer, and I'm not trying to be sleazy or too sexy. I'm just trying to be young and interesting and fun and I want to entertain everybody, and costumes help. When I say costumes, I mean, it's an outfit, but it truly is a costume to me. I would never wear something like that just out on the street."
The Top Seven remaining Idol hopefuls are Melinda Doolittle, Lakisha Jones, Blake Lewis, Chris Richardson, Sanjaya Malakar, Jordin Sparks, and Phil Stacey, who is the most likely to be next off the show based on previous weeks' votes.
Martina McBride is the musical guest this week.
American Idol airs Tuesdays at 8 on Fox.
