Jimi Hendrix estate wins $900,000 in court battle
The Jimi Hendrix estate has finally collected payment on a court case that dates back to 2003. At the time, a British court ordered music entrepreneur Ed Chalpin to pay Experience Hendrix L.L.C. 304,173 British pounds, stemming from his use of recordings made when Hendrix was an unknown backing guitarist in the 1960s R&B group Curtis Knight & the Squires. Chapin didn't pay up, and he also ignored a ruling in New York State that upheld the British court decision.
Chalpin tried to auction off his Hendrix tapes last year, but Experience Hendrix filed suit over the move, and Chapin had to withdraw the recordings. He was then held in contempt of court this past February, and soon after, Chalpin settled the case by paying the full amount of the original judgment plus most of the interest accrued since 2003, which came to nearly $900,000.
