Report: New Police music fails to wow music executives
If a published report is to be believed, the Police have been working up new songs, but no record companies are interested so far. In their column in the New York Daily News, gossip reporters George Rush and Joanna Rush Malloy wrote that a "rough demo" of new material was circulated among some record company executives, but that no one liked what they heard. A "well-placed source" is quoted as saying, "The band wanted a deal for a new record that their tour would support. People listened to the tracks, but they sounded like Sting's solo albums -- smooth jazz and New Age stuff. People want to hear them rock! They want another 'Message In A Bottle.'" The source added, "The execs who heard the demo didn't hear any hits. So nobody bid. At this stage, there's not going to be a new album to go with the tour. It's a missed opportunity."
However, an unnamed executive from Interscope, which owns the Police's label A&M, said, "There was no demo. We haven't heard any new music. They've always been on A&M, and they still are. I don't think they can go anywhere else."
The Police reunion tour, which is being held to mark the band's 30th anniversary, gets underway May 28th in Vancouver, British Columbia.
