Rock photographer Joel Brodsky dies
Rock photographer Joel Brodsky died Sunday (March 1st), of a heart attack. The 67-year-old established his reputation after shooting famous photographs of Doors frontman Jim Morrison, including the cover of their self-titled debut album in 1967. He went on to photograph over 400 album covers for rock, soul and blues performers including Kiss, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Harry Chapin, Funkadelic, Joan Baez, The Stooges, James Brown, Tom Waits and many more.
According to CBC Arts, Brodsky's daughter, Jill Holt, said her father's favorite image was his photograph of Booker T & the MGs walking across McLemore Avenue in Memphis, in an image modeled after the Beatles' Abbey Road cover.
Brodsky's photo of Isaac Hayes on his Black Moses album unfolded into a four foot by three foot cross-shaped poster and became the biggest album cover ever printed.
He eventually went into advertising, shooting Avon, Revlon and Bloomingdale's ads until his retirement in 2001.
Brodsky is survived by his wife Valerie, three daughters and three grandchildren.
