Squeeze announce U.S. reunion tour
Squeeze is heading back on the road. The band led by singer-guitarists Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook has booked 12 shows across the U.S., beginning July 31st in Hyannis, Massachusetts, and ending August 14th in Saratoga, California. Tilbrook has toured the country several times in recent years -- doing both solo acoustic shows and full-band performances with his group the Fluffers -- and Difford recently did a short run of dates here as a trio, playing with a second guitarist and vocalist, but this will mark the first time since 1998 that the songwriting partners will hit the road together.
Difford told us that he's excited about working with Tilbrook again: "I really love Glenn. He's one of my closest friends -- now, more so than in the past. And, you know, I really appreciate what he does, and I'm really looking forward to doing some shows with him."
Difford left Squeeze and checked himself into a rehab facility on the eve of a U.S. run in early 1999, and the band went on without him. Difford didn't enjoy touring anymore at that point, and although he'd been sober for quiet a few years, he was afraid that he would slip if he went on the road.
There's been no word yet on who else will be in the band, but one person who won't be is keyboardist Jools Holland, who's got a tour of his own to do in August.
Squeeze has also booked a short run of U.K. dates for late November and early December.
There's no word yet on whether any new music might be on the way, or whether the reunion might extend past the shows already booked.
