Modest Mouse guitarist designs footwear line
Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr has teamed up with a shoe company called PF Flyer to design a line of sneakers for charity. According to Aversion.com, only 216 pairs will be manufactured, with half available in the U.S. and the other half available in England. The shoes will be sold through an eBay auction with proceeds going to Cure Autism Now and the Pictor School, a special-education school located in Manchester, England.
Marr was best known as the guitarist for influential '80s alternative act the Smiths before joining Modest Mouse last year. Although Modest Mouse bassist Eric Judy admitted to being a huge Smiths fan, he recently told us he wasn't star struck having Marr in the band: "You know, maybe there was a couple of shows where I was just like, 'Wow, I'm playing my guitar on a stage next to Johnny,' but by that time I'd already, you know, he'd already been in our band for a while and we'd spent part of the last year with him, you know. But I've always respected him as a musician and looked up to him, you know. But after spending a lengthy amount of time with anybody, they just become another person as well. Now he's just become a friend."
Marr joined Modest Mouse in time to appear on the band's latest album, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, which debuted at Number One on the Billboard album chart in late March.
Eric Judy has missed a number of shows with the group since late April, reportedly due to illness. There is no word on whether he has returned yet.
Modest Mouse just completed a North American tour and begins a U.K. trek this weekend.
