Roger Daltrey slams Al Gore's "Live Earth" concerts

Roger Daltrey took time out to slam Al Gore's upcoming Live Earth concert at London's Wembley Stadium. The show, which will feature numerous acts supporting awareness of global warming, including Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, will not feature the Who.

Daltrey told London's The Sun, "Bollocks to that! The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert. I can't believe it. Let's burn even more fuel. We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don't know what a rock concert's ever going to do to help."

Daltrey, went on to add that, "Everybody on this planet at the moment, unless they are living in the deepest rainforest in Brazil, knows about climate change... My answer is to burn all the f***ing oil as quick as possible and then the politicians will have to find a solution."

He went on to compare 2006's Live 8 concerts to relieve African nations of their international debt, and 1985's Live Aid concerts for famine relief -- both of which the Who played, by adding that, "What did we really achieve at Live 8? We got loads of platitudes and no action. Who were we kidding there? At least with Live Aid, Bob Geldof was willing to work the trenches and they did save a lot of lives. We could see what we achieved at the end of it."

The Who vocalist confirmed that the band also would not appear at the Concert For Diana the week before: "It would be wrong of us to play. It should be for those two boys, the show that they want. They obviously want Elton John, as he holds memories for them, but it would be a joke for us to play. Not unless they are real Who fans, which I very much doubt."

The Who are currently on the road in Europe and have been switching their setlist around. They've been adding material from their Quadrophenia album, along with older favorites such as "Substitute," "The Kids Are Alright," and "Relay" in place of their latest mini-opera Wire And Glass. Daltrey says the band wants to fit more rarities into the current shows: "We are going to revisit all the stuff, and see if we can re-approach things that we passed over years and years ago. We've done it with a few tracks, we intend to go on with more. But the reasons that things are usually really obscure is that they are really unworkable on stage. But we'll see. We're trying."

The Who will perform on Tuesday, May 22nd, in Birmingham, UK.
