Sir Paul McCartney's mandolin
Paul McCartney says that learning the mandolin help inspire the lead track from his upcoming album, called Memory Almost Full. The song, titled "Dance Tonight," which is also his first European single from the album, was leaked last week to French radio and has been making the rounds on the Internet over the weekend. The song, which is a country-like stomper, is stylistically reminiscent of George Harrison's latter-day work with ELO's Jeff Lynne.
Macca told Uncut magazine that learning the mandolin opened a new creative door for him explaining that, "It isn't tuned like a guitar so I didn't know my way around it. But the feeling of picking my way through and finding chords was magic. It was like I was 17 again."
He went on to say that, "I remembered -- this is what it is all about. It was like me and John (Lennon) learning piano. You play and then you hit a wrong note and you go 'ooohh!' And you write a whole song on that chord. The excitement of getting the mandolin, finding new chords, that's really lifted me. That's the opening track to my new album."
To clarify the timeline of the new album, Memory Almost Full was started in 2003 with producer David Kahne prior to the sessions for his last album, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard. McCartney then put the album on hold while he recorded Chaos with producer Nigel Godrich. Upon completing his last U.S. tour, McCartney re-entered the studio with Kahne and recorded the remaining tracks for the set.
Internet reports originally suggested that the songs were possibly older songs rejected for McCartney's more recent projects. Both McCartney and Kahne have been quick to state that none of the songs were at anytime considered or rejected for McCartney's 2001 Driving Rain or 2005 Chaos And Creation In The Backyard albums.
Macca plays most of the instruments on the album himself, but his touring band pops up to perform on most of the 15-minute song cycle that closes the album. They also play on a rocker called "Only Mama Knows," a snippet of which is featured on McCartney's new website myeyesite.com.
McCartney's new U.S. single is called "Ever Present Past." The album, Memory Almost Full, will be out on June 5th. McCartney is rumored to be hitting the road in support of the album in Europe some time in the fall. So far, no dates have been announced.
