Bruce Springsteen: Hands-on approach for live DVD

Bruce Springsteen took a hands-on approach for the DVD portion of his Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live In Dublin CD/DVD, which is due out on Tuesday, June 5th Director Thom Zimny told Billboard that, "Bruce and (manager Jon) Landau are always involved in the filmmaking process. Bruce is very aware of that film process; he's always been there in the cutting room... all the details are examined, from the writing to the stage design to how things translate to screen. All the choices are tried. That's the beauty of the cutting room: that's where you find the soul of the piece."

Zimny added that, much like his albums, Springsteen is hands-on every step of the way: "In all my experiences working with Bruce, the music is the central focus. You want to make sure the energy is translated, but in a way that doesn't interfere with the dialogue between performer and audience."

Zimny has been Springsteen's key live project director since 2000, having worked with "The Boss" on such concert projects as the archival Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 DVD, and modern projects such as the Emmy-winning Live In New York City, the Emmy-nominated Live In Barcelona, and Springsteen's 2005 episode of VH1 Storytellers.

Springsteen says that throughout his career most of his music has its roots in both blues and gospel: "The two elements that back up one another is blues and gospel music. If you listen to the verses, that's the blues. Go to 'Promised Land' or 'Land Of Hope And Dreams' and go to the verses--that's the blues. When you get to the chorus, that's the gospel, you know? (chuckles) That's the gospel music. And the choruses are always, they come straight out of -- whether it's a 'Promised Land' or a 'Badlands' -- it's straight out of those gospel influences, and, and the verses are the blues. You, you connect those two things together, and you're both lifting people up and you're grounding 'em at the same time. That's kind of how we've worked over the years."

Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band Live In Dublin, will be available online and in stores tomorrow (June 5th.) The physical CD set will consist of a concert DVD, a Blu-ray Disc, and a separate two-CD set.

In addition to material from the album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, highlights on the new set include more folk-oriented arrangements of such Springsteen favorites as "Blinded By The Light," "Growin' Up," "Atlantic City," "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)," "Open All Night," "Bobby Jean," "For You," "If I Should Fall Behind," and "The River."
