Roger Waters says Pink Floyd classics relevant for Live Earth
Roger Waters says that he'll be performing several Pink Floyd classics that seem politically relevant during his appearance at the Live Earth concert on July 7th at New Jersey's Giants Stadium.Waters told Rolling Stone that several Floyd numbers can accurately sum up today's political climate, explaining that, "I'm going to do... 'Money' because it seems that the love of power still drives global politics. And I'll do 'Us And Them' -- the unseemly scrabble of world politics toward national and personal self-interest needs to be set aside if we're going to cooperate with each other to solve this crisis that faces us all."
He was asked if he'll miss his Pink Floyd bandmates, with whom he reunited in 2005 for Live 8: "It will be different. Playing with Dave (Gilmour), Nick (Mason), and Rick (Wright) was very special for me, and from the stage it was quite clear that it was a very special moment for everyone. It will lack that. But I don't want to belittle my current band -- they're great."
Waters took time out to salute Al Gore for his work in publicizing the effects of global warming: "If it hadn't been for Al Gore pounding on his lectern all these years attempting to explain to us that this is a very real problem... we might be blithely going on trying to get everyone in the world to drive a Humvee. This is one more step in the process, to educate us and to encourage cooperation to deal with this problem that could kill the whole human race."
Roger Waters performs on Saturday (June 22nd) in Calgary at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
