Alleged Jim Morrison death cover up

The details surrounding Doors singer Jim Morrison's 1971 death have come under question, now that former New York Times journalist Sam Bernett -- who was also a club owner and a friend of Morrison -- has come forward with a different version than what was recorded on Morrison's death certificate. The information had supposedly been under wraps because of an implied threat to Bernett if he spoke up.

According to Rollingstone.com, Bernett says that early on July 3rd, 1971, the 27-year-old singer went to a club to buy heroin for his girlfriend Pamela Courson, but then disappeared into the bathroom with the drugs. "About half an hour later," Bernett recalled, "a cloakroom attendant came up to me and told me someone was locked in one of the cubicles and wasn't coming out. I got a bouncer to smash the door down." Seeing Morrison slumped over the toilet, he knew that an overdose was involved. "We were certain he'd been snorting heroin because there was foam coming out of his lips as well as blood. He was scared of needles so never injected drugs."

Although a club patron who was a medic proclaimed Morrison dead, when the drug dealers appeared, they insisted he was just passed out and carried him out of the club, promising to take care of him. Presumably, they then deposited the singer in the bathtub of his Paris digs, where he was eventually found.

Shortly thereafter, both Bernett and singer Marianne Faithfull -- who was also present -- were sworn to secrecy by a representative of the club owner. "Marianne never mentioned Jim again. She won't talk about what happened in the club to this day," says Bernett.

Bernett says he's come forward now because he felt it was time to come clean about the incident. "I want to get rid of my heavy load. At least everything is now out there to be discussed. I've said what I have to say."

A spokesman for France's Police National told the U.K.'s The Mail, "The new evidence will have to considered," if a civil court case is to be launched.
