Classic Rock quickies

Details have emerged about Bruce Springsteen's impromptu performance late last month at a friend's wedding in River Vale, New Jersey. People.com reported that "The Boss" jumped up onstage with the wedding band, called Hank Lane Music, and performed a rendition of his own "If I Should Fall Behind" before launching into the Chuck Berry classic "You Never Can Tell."

According to the band's official website hanklane.com, after his brief set, Springsteen and wife Patti Scialfa were seen dancing with the rest of the guests to such '80s classics as John "Cougar" Mellencamp's "Hurts So Good" and Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer."

The official trailer and a timecoded clip of the new Bob Dylan biopic, I'm Not There, can be accessed via YouTube. The trailer features the video from Dylan's 1991 song "Series Of Dreams," with the previously unreleased 1967 Basement Tapes outtake "I'm Not There (1956)" playing over the archival footage.

In addition to listing the various actors who portray Dylan in the film, including Cate Blanchette, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, and Christian Bale, Dylan is also listed as one of the film's stars. I'm Not There opens on September 21st.

The time coded black and white clip from the movie features Dylan, portrayed by Cate Blanchette, riding in a limousine in 1966 while meeting Allen Ginsburg, who is portrayed by David Cross.

Chicago has announced a contest in which the band's fans can submit their designs for the band's upcoming Best Of Chicago 40th Anniversary Edition CD. In addition to being credited for the album's design, the winner will receive four tickets to an upcoming Chicago concert in the U.S. or Canada, the band's entire catalog on CD/DVD, and a 40th Anniversary poster autographed by the current members of Chicago.

All entries must be received by Tuesday, July 24th. For more information log on to chicagocover.rhino.com.

Trumpet player and Chicago co-founder Lee Loughnane says that he always knew that music was his calling: "I knew that this is what I wanted to do, and I was gonna do it -- you know, when I was a kid, I was saying, 'I wanna do this... I don't wanna do anything else.' But I had no idea that (chuckles) it would actually come true! (laughs)" )

Chicago will next perform on Thursday (July 19th) in Farwell, Michigan at the Mountain Rock Music Festival.

Kiss asked their fans to vote on which of their favorite rarely-performed songs they'd like to see the band play during their summer gigs and the Kiss Army voted for "All American Man," from the band's 1977 mostly live double album, Alive II. Receiving 12,000 votes from the loyal troops, the track earned 26% of the vote. Follow-ups were "Mr. Speed" (17%), "Rock Bottom" (10%), "Almost Human" (9%), "Magic Touch" (8%), "Sweet Pain" (8%), "Million To One" (7%), "Ladies Room" (6%), "Strange Ways" (5%), and "Let Me Know" (4%). Kiss will include "All American Man" in their set list on July 20th at the Kewadin Casinos in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; July 21st at Rock Fest 2007 in Cadott, Wisconsin and on July 27th at the Soboba Casino Arena in San Jacinto, California.

Def Leppard will perform on Live With Regis and Kelly on August 15th to promote their forthcoming album, Sparkle Lounge. Singer Joe Elliott told Billboard.com that the "very rock" album is "85, 90 percent finished." "I'm not gonna say it's radically different to anything we've ever done," he said. "There's classic Def Leppard. There's stuff that sounds like it's going back to the middle, late-'70s, AC/DC and new wave-type sounding stuff. There's definitely some moments on it where anybody that's familiar with our music will go, 'Whoa! I wasn't expecting that!' We've just been very adventurous, musically, on certain numbers."

On Rush drummer Neil Peart's current diary entry, he comments on his motorcycling on the current Snakes & Arrows tour. "With only a few days at home after the first leg of the Snakes & Arrows tour (16 shows, 7,257 miles of motorcycling), this will definitely be the 'short version,'" he begins, then goes on to tell a detailed story that would only resonate with a die-hard, trivia-loving Rush fan about the man who inspired their song "Red Barchetta" and how he joined Neil for part of the ride through the "very back roads of West Virginia for a few days" before attending his first Rush concert near Boston.
