Hamburg to erect Beatles monument
The German city of Hamburg will honor the Beatles with a monument to commemorate their contribution to the city that helped launch their career. Construction on the $625,000 steel monument will begin this year, according to organizer and radio station Oldie 95, and will immortalize not only Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, but also original bassist Stu Sutcliff, who died there in 1962 from a brain hemorrhage.
The band built their playing skills at such clubs as the Kaiserkeller, the Star, the Indra, and the Casbah from 1960 through 1962, refining and popularizing such hit songs as "Love Me Do." The monument will be built on a corner in the St. Pauli district, where most of these clubs were located.
