Queen guitarist completes PhD thesis
Over thirty years after he put away his thesis on interplanetary dust clouds in order to become the guitarist for Queen, 59-year-old Brian May has finally completed it, for his PhD in astrophysics. Although May had earned a degree in physics at Imperial College in London, and worked on the thesis from 1971 to 1974, once Queen began to enjoy success there was no time for him to pursue his doctorate. It was after he co-authored a children's science book, Bang! The Complete History of the Universe, with astronomer Sir Patrick Moore last year that he realized that little progress had been made on the subject, so he spent nine months reviewing his old notes and conducting research at Imperial College in London.
"For the last nine months, I've done nothing except slave over my PhD, which is now written up, thank God," May reportedly told students at Britain's Exeter University when he received an honorary degree. "But there are times when you really want to give up. There are times when you go, 'Why on earth did I take this on?'"
May will receive his PhD next May, assuming his thesis is approved.
