New Mick Jagger solo collection due out in October
A new Mick Jagger solo best-of compilation will come out October 2nd. The Very Best Of Mick Jagger will include most of his solo hits, as well as an unreleased 1974 Mick Jagger-John Lennon collaboration called "Too Many Cooks (Spoil The Soup)."The song, recorded while Lennon was producing Harry Nilsson's Pussycats album in Los Angeles, doesn't feature Lennon, who produced and arranged the track, but does include performances by such heavyweights such as Jack Bruce and Al Kooper. Lennon had originally wanted the track released as a single on the Beatles' Apple Records, but legal snags have kept the collaboration unreleased until now.
The Very Best Of Mick Jagger features cuts from all four of Jagger's solo albums: She's The Boss (1985), Primitive Cool (1987), Wandering Spirit (1993), and Goddess In The Doorway (2001). Other tracks featured on the set are Jagger's "Memo For Turner" from his 1970 movie Performance; his 1978 duet with Peter Tosh on the Temptations' "(You Got to Walk And) Don't Look Back"; his 1985 duet with David Bowie on Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' "Dancing In The Street"; and his Golden Globe-winning song "Old Habits Die Hard" from the movie Alfie.
The set also features Jagger's 1992 cover of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Checking Up On My Baby," which was recorded for a projected blues solo album with the Red Devils that never materialized, but has been available on the collector's circuit for years.
Notably missing from the collection are Jagger's only two solo recordings to hit the Top Ten: his 1984 team up with Michael Jackson and the Jacksons, "State Of Shock"; and the theme song to the 1985 comedy Ruthless People.
Mick Jagger says that he's always been drawn to the strict confines of writing songs for movies: "Doing a soundtrack, you don't have the complete freedom to do what you'd like. You have to write a song, obviously for a specific movie, around a specific character or characters, and to fit in or enhance a specific scene, so it's much more disciplined, in that way."
The Rolling Stones will next perform on Saturday (August 11th) in Lausanne, Switzerland.
