Metallica, Foo Fighters lead Live Earth CD/DVD

Metallica, the Foo Fighters, the Smashing Pumpkins and Chris Cornell are among the dozens of artists featured on Live Earth - The Concerts For A Climate in Crisis, a single-CD and double-DVD package chronicling the Live Earth concerts which took place on all seven continents on July 7th, 2007. The set comes out on November 20th and also includes performances from the Beastie Boys, the Dave Matthews Band, Wolfmother, Keane, Snow Patrol, Bon Jovi, Lenny Kravitz, Taking Back Sunday, A.F.I. and numerous other rock, pop and urban acts. The first single from the set will be Linkin Park's "Bleed It Out," recorded at the Live Earth show held in Japan.

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins told us that his memory of the band's Live Earth performance revolves around frontman Dave Grohl: [ Click to listen if you have a backstage pass] "We as a band played good. Dave as a frontman took it to a whole other level. I mean, we were obviously there for a really good reason, I think, although I don't think it really got as much good publicity in America. But Dave, really, just strictly on a performance level, he really did take it to a whole other level. I mean, he became like that really great frontman that can turn a stadium into a club."

A digital bundle of selected tracks from the set will be available from iTunes and other online retailers on November 6th.

In addition to the concert performances, the DVDs will contain six short films on climate change from the Live Earth Film Series and a documentary on the making of the worldwide concert event.

Net proceeds from sales of the CD/DVD set will go to benefit the Alliance for Climate Protection, which aims to persuade the public to adopt and implement effective and comprehensive solutions for the climate crisis.

Live Earth was spearheaded by former U.S. vice president and recent Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore to create global awareness of the increasing climate crisis. Concerts were staged in a single 24-hour period in New York, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg and Hamburg, with additional events in Antarctica, Kyoto, and Washington, DC.
