Pink Floyd releasing 16-disc box set
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd's debut album, the band will release a new 16-disc box set called Oh By The Way on December 4th, containing all of their studio albums. Billboard reported that for the time being the collection will be limited to a pressing of 10,000, and will only be available as an import in the U.S.The albums are repackaged as mini-vinyl reproductions, including replicas of each album's posters, inserts and inner dust sleeves. The set will feature a new portrait collage from Floyd's longtime visual collaborator, graphic artist Storm Thorgerson, and will also include a 20 by 30 inch poster.
The albums included in the Oh By The Way box set are: The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucer Full Of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, and The Division Bell.
Missing from the set are the band's live, compilation and rarities sets, including Relics, A Collection Of Great Dance Songs, Works, Delicate Sound Of Thunder, and Pulse.
Nick Mason says that although Pink Floyd made a dramatic shift stylistically when Roger Waters took over the as the band's main songwriter after Syd Barrett left the band, elements of their earlier work continued on throughout their entire career: [
Click to listen if you have a backstage pass] "Lyrically they're quite different, because Syd's writing is different to Roger's, but musically, I think, there's a style, there's a sound and a way of assembling the sound that's continued through, and I think particularly in terms of overlaying sound and then this sort of introduction of special effects. That fact that 'See Emily Play,' for instance, has that bridge which is sort of a double-time, speeded-up tape thing, that was a forerunner of all sorts of ideas and sound effects and strange noises that have been used consistently ever since." Earlier this year Pink Floyd released a deluxe three-disc edition of their debut album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.
