Alice Cooper, Jordin Sparks dedicate land for teen center

Alice Cooper and this year's American Idol champ, Jordin Sparks, joined forces Friday (December 14th) to dedicate the site for The Rock, a new teen center that the veteran shock rocker is spearheading at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Cooper made his entrance on a backhoe, which broke ground for the $7 million, 29,000-square-foot center, while Sparks rode in a Corvette convertible. The Silent Cry, a local teen garage band, performed.

Cooper is a long-time contributor to Grand Canyon, a Christian university founded in 1949. He's received an honorary doctorate from the school. Sparks' grandmother is a GCU alumnus, and she donated some of her Idol winnings to the college.

The Rock, which is being funded partly by Cooper's Solid Rock Foundation and is slated to open in 2009, will offer after-school programs and special events for area youth, including a full music program -- complete with a recording studio -- sports and study facilities, computers, and a coffee house.

In a statement, Cooper said, "With Grand Canyon University's support, we are fulfilling a vision we've had for several years -- to provide teens and children with a central place to learn, have fun, and explore their creativity in a supportive environment. I hope that in years to come, The Rock will be the first of many such teen centers in Arizona and around the country."
