Foo Fighters: Two stages on the road

Foo Fighters will use two different stages, additional musicians and a "huge production" on its upcoming U.S. tour, according to Billboard.com. Bassist Nate Mendel told the site, "There's a main stage and we also have an acoustic stage. We're splitting the setup in dynamics and also in physical location." The set will feature an acoustic segment and there will be four extra musicians on the road with the group, similar to the Foos' first-ever unplugged tour in 2006, although Mendel said that they will also play on some of the louder songs in the show.

Mendel told us how the Foos have benefited from having four more musicians on stage with them: [ Click to listen if you have a backstage pass] "It adds a whole 'nother dimension to what we're doing now. It's just been the four of us for years and, you know, we've over the last couple of records been doing this extra instrumentation. And now we can bring it on the stage and do it live and create a whole other dynamic where you've got this huge band onstage making this crazy noise that sometimes is noise and sometimes comes together -- musically we're still kind of working on that."

Mendel did not disclose some of the other "mechanical gags" that will feature in the show, although he did say the production would not include pyro.

The tour kicks off on January 16th in Sunrise, Florida, with dates plotted through early March. This will be the quartet's first full-length trek in support of its sixth studio album, Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace.

Foo Fighters have been nominated for five Grammy Awards this year, including Album of the Year for Echoes... and Record of the Year for the CD's first single, "The Pretender."
