Journey finds new singer via YouTube
Journey has a new singer, Arnel Pineda. Pineda is from Quezon City in the Philippines, and has been singing Journey covers and new material with his own band there, called The Zoo. In a press release, guitarist Neal Schon said he found Pineda after searching YouTube for several days for singers, when he finally saw a video of him performing the Journey track "Faithfully," and knew he had found what he was looking for.
Schon says Pineda initially thought it was a joke when he contacted him about possibly joining the band.
Pineda replaces Jeff Scott Soto who left earlier this year, who in turn had been lead singer for only one year, since the health-related departure of Steve Augeri in 2006.
Steve Perry, who sang on most of Journey's biggest hits, joined the band in 1977 and left in 1998, when Augeri replaced him.
In addition to Pineda on lead vocals, Journey now includes Schon on guitar, Jonathan Cain on keyboards, Ross Valory on bass, and Deen Castronovo on drums.
The band is working on a new album with producer Kevin Shirley, which they hope to release in the spring or summer of next year.
