Townshend to open for Eric Clapton?

Pete Townshend is rumored to be the opening act next month for Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood's joint dates at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Fan speculation on various Who and Townshend message boards seems to indicate that Townshend will be on hand at the three shows after the Who's official website thewho.com posted the following message: "Pete Townshend to perform at a major gig in New York? After his performance at an annual village gig laid on by pal Eric Clapton for New Year's Eve, the rumor's now going around that Who guitarist Pete Townshend is going to be performing at 'a much larger gig' in New York sometime before March. No further details are available."

Townshend rang in the New Year with Clapton, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and others at a semi-private show for sober guests outside of London.

Townshend was originally slated to perform late last year at the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert at London's O2 Arena, but backed out after Led Zeppelin announced that they would be reforming in honor of Ertegun.

Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood will perform at New York's Madison Square Garden on February 25th, 26th, and 28th.

Townshend is currently in Britain writing material for the Who's upcoming album. There has been no official word as to whether Pete Townshend will be performing at any of the Clapton/Winwood shows..
